The flowers of Clematis ‘Royal Velours' grow so profusely that they almost smother the deep green foliage. The blooms are small and bell-shaped. They have a delightful rich, reddish-purple hue, with a lovely velvet texture. The Clematis ‘Royal Velours' will give you a stunning display right through from July to September. This elegant Clematis is typical of the viticella variety - it's a fast growing, slender climber that thrives on rambling amongst mature shrubs and trees. It will happily scramble up and over pergolas or a variety of garden ornaments. This magnificent cultivar is deceptively easy to grow and will relish almost any position. Height: 4m (12'). Grow Clematis in sheltered sunny borders in any moist, well drained soil. Clematis plants particularly dislike dry soils so add plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to improve moisture retention in summer. Plant clematis with the top of the rootball positioned 7.5cm (3”) below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Be sure to provide the twining stems with an appropriate support, such as trellis or wires attached to fences and pergolas. Alternatively grow clematis up freestanding plant frames in patio containers. When planting in containers, use a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.

Feed and water frequently throughout the growing season. When pruning group 3 Clematis remember that they flower on the current year's growth. In spring, simply cut back all of the previous year's growth to a pair of strong buds at the base of the plant. Afterwards, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant.
