Product Information

A popular, easy to grow flowering shrub that is perfect for UK gardens.

Viburnum opulus ‘Roseum’ AKA the Snowball Tree, is a bushy, deciduous shrub with striking blooms and lobed, maple-like leaves that turn fiery shades of red and purple in the autumn.

Most noted for its voluminous clusters of flowers, this viburnum bursts into bloom from early May, becoming a mass of green-tinted white snowball flowers which become flushed with pink as they age.

Unlike the more common Guelder Rose, fruits are not produced as the flowers of the Snowball Tree are sterile, however the show of spring and autumn colour more than makes up for this - plus the flowers are just perfect for cutting and bringing into your home.

Fully deserving its coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be sure that this is a proven garden performer, robust and vigorous, and guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience. You can therefore plant this in the garden with confidence, for stunning displays for many years to come.

Supplied as an established plant in a 7/9cm pot, ready for immediate planting. Will reach approx. 4m x 4m and is perfect for a flowering hedge or as a specimen plant in borders.

Care Information

Planting Advice for Viburnum opulus 'Roseum':

  • Water your potted plant well.
  • Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
  • Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot.
  • Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball.
  • Water well and mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.

Aftercare of your Viburnum Snowball Tree:

  • Plant in any good soil in full sun or partial shade.
  • Perfect for hedging, the Guelder Rose will tolerate exposed sites and coastal areas.
  • Water regularly until established.

Pruning Advice for Viburnum Roseum:

  • After flowering prune established specimens, removing up to one in five of the oldest and weakest branches to the base.
  • Plants will also tolerate a harder, regenerate prune if they become poor shaped after a few years.
  • Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant after pruning.
