A fast-growing annual with creeping and climbing stems and peltate leaves. Open trumpet-shaped flowers in numerous shades of red and yellow. The strong peppery tasting leaves and particularly the flowers are used in salads. Sow in the garden along wire mesh or a trellis. Can also be used as ground cover, and grown in larger boxes as a hanging plant. Very little or no fertilisation. The fresh harvested seeds are sometimes preserved as capers.
