Six pot-grown specimens of Spiranthes Chadds Ford — the most popular and reliable of the autumn-flowering Lady’s Tresses orchids. A pack of six creates an immediate, naturalistic colony effect in a border or rock garden.

Spiranthes Chadds Ford is a hybrid between S. cernua and S. odorata, selected for its vigour in European conditions. It produces dense, spiralling spikes of pure white, faintly vanilla-scented flowers in August and September, when most other hardy orchids have long finished.

• Soil: Moist but well-drained; tolerates heavier soils better than most orchids
